Scouts Expedition Challenge

Over the Easter Holidays, four Patrol Leaders (PLs) (Max, Jonna, Dan and  Connor) completed their Expedition challenge.  The challenge is towards the boys' Chief Scouts Gold Awards, the highest award available in the Scout section.

The Expedition challenge requires scouts to plan, journey for at least four hours a day, use a map to keep track of where they are, stay overnight, cook the evening meal and breakfast and acheive at least one goal.

The event itself consisted of a train journey to Dorking, followed by a  mile walk to Holmbury St Mary Youth Hostel.  After relaxing, cooking their evening meal and enjoying a well earned rest, they began the next day with a cooked breakfast before a short hike (2½  miles) to Gomshall station.  The train took them to Betchworth station before the final leg of the journey - an up hill hike of another 5 miles to finish at the top of Reigate Hill.

During the hike, the Scouts also had to identify different trees and provide grid references for the trees.

The four PLs will be giving a brief presentation of their Expedition at the Parents' Open evening next month.

PL Led Evening

Another component towards the Chief Scouts Gold Award is to plan and run a Troop Night.  Five Patrol Leaders (Connor, Dan, Jonna, Max and Edward) recently organised an evening that included a Nature Quiz, making and firing rockets, as well as some games.
