Every year we have an all-night hike open to Scouts, Explorers and any parents. In previous years we have walked from Biggin Hill, Newlands Corner and the Bluebell Railway, all finishing back in Redhill for a cooked breakfast (you need an incentive to walk all night!).
This year our route started at the Russ Hill Hotel. Assembling there at 10.00pm, 25 Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and a couple of parents set off along the Sussex Border Path towards Gatwick Airport. It was a good, flat route accompanied by a pleasant, mild evening made this a perfect hike across fields, through meadows and following the perimeter of the runway
By 1.00am we had arrived at the North Terminal and after explaining to the police officers who had stopped to see what we doing, it was a time for a group photo. From here the route took us under the main road, north along the railway then following cycle route 21.
By 5.00am we had arrived at Redhill Aerodrome, our finishing post and after a short rest it was time for the traditional cooked breakfast in the cafe.
Well done to all those that took part and mark your diaries for next year's hike - normally the nearest Friday to the longest day.
