It’s good to talk!
That’s what British Telecom said back in the Nineties. But how things have changed since then. Yes it is still good to talk but there are so many other ways to communicate today – email, texts, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, Skype, YouTube, etc.
Mobile phones are as common as reality shows on the TV. Just about everyone has one, either to use as a conventional phone or to text the latest gossip and embarrassing picture. Could you imagine a time when mobile phones didn't exist or there were no emails. Where you had to send a letter or telegram and then wait a number of days or weeks for a response. Or an even older time when you had to use morse code or semaphore to send a message over a long distance (this used to be a badge for this in Scouts!).
But technology and time moves on. We now have an abundance of communication channels at our disposal all of which enables a ’24 hour’ society.
The Scout Group has embraced this and now has a number of different communication channels as follows:
- 17th Reigate email - one for each section
- 17th Reigate website - this is the place to find all the latest news about the Group and our Building for the Future project
- 17th Reigate YouTube channel - accessed through the Group website. Here you can find various clips including our recent Summer Camps
- 17th Reigate Facebook page - If you are a Facebook user please add us so that we can publicise what we do to a wider audience
- 17th Reigate Twitter account - @17thReigate. If you use Twitter please follow us
- 17th Reigate newsletter sent out each term with highlights from each of the section and updates on our new Scout Hall
- 17th Reigate noticeboard at the back on the church
- 17th Reigate Scout mobile phones - we have 2 of these that we use for expeditions for emergencies
- 17th Reigate GPS tracker - a very useful, albeit one-way, communication to help us track Explorers whilst on expeditions. It means that we can be in the right place to meet them at the right time and not spend hours sat in a car park!
So it’s no longer good to talk but instead good to communicate no matter what format you use.
