Survival Camp 2011

PLs and APLs successfully completed this year's 17th Reigate Scout Survival Camp held at Broadstone Warren.  Arriving at the site on Friday evening, they had to construct shelters using tarpaulins and string, light a fire, and prepare a hot drink.  Surviving only on the contents of a ration-pack, breakfast on the Saturday morning comprised porridge for some and for the more adventurous, tinned sardines on oat-cakes!

After breakfast we decamped to a different part of the site where the Scouts had to complete a number of tasks including building two-man shelters out of natural materials, digging a gypsy-well and filtering water using Millbank bags, and lighting a signal fire (and congratulations to Max, Dominic, Chris, and David for getting the biggest volume of smoke the quickest).  Saturday dinner was rabbit stew, the Scouts having skinned the rabbits beforehand.

Having slept in their two-man shelters, the camp completed on Sunday with a 9Km hike back to East Grinstead.

Also, for those who'd already turned in when we made the paracord bracelets, or simply want a better explanation and demo than Mike's, there's a reasonably clear video here.  It uses the simpler two-cord approach with knot rather than toggle.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9U_cYyhRiA&feature=relmfu
