National Water Rockets June 2011

Weather conditions made for tricky launch conditions at the National Physical Laboratory's annual water-rocket competition, pushing the 17th Reigate team off the podium this year and into 6th position (out of 17 teams).  A very creditable finish nonetheless given the rain and gusty breeze (and a leak on the pressure gauge which did not help!).  Harry's rocket went the furthest after it was pumped to a mighty 120psi (normal launch pressure is around 50psi).  Most of Chris's rocket went forwards although one fin was later retrieved from behind the crowd near the barbeque.

The team, comprising Harry, Chris, David, Edward, Dominic, Andrew, and honorary Scoutette Niamh, did pick up a special award presented by the Mayoress of Richmond for the most spectacular landing, somehow managing to land one of the rockets upright on its fins in the high-scoring zone.  Intentionally, of course!

Not so successful was the "launch an egg" entry.  Despite Gordon's careful and eggstensive use of bubble-wrap, Edward's rocket performed perfectly, hitting the ground nose-first and ensuring its payload was well and truly scrambled.

Photos of the event, including some of "the world's largest water-rocket", are on the website or via the link below.
