Eleven Scouts, one soon-to-be-Scout, and four brave parents enjoyed a night's camping in woodland near South Nutfield. Billed as a lightweight camp, the idea was to take the bare minimum necessary and so everyone slept under shelters made from tarpaulins and string, and in the morning cooked breakfast over open fires started with flint and steels (and firelighters, having discovered that the seedheads from bullrushes, extolled by Mike as ideal for tinder, were in fact pretty rubbish). Later, the Scouts learned how to make string from stinging-nettles before going into the woods in search of the remains of Hillsbrow School (which we found - see photo below of original flight of steps. More info about Hillsbrow can be found here: http://www.redhill-reigate-history.co.uk/hillsbrow.htm)
Our thanks as always to Priory Events for the loan of their woodland.
